Foreigners Should Prepare IDR500 Mn to Wed

VIVAnews - The Indonesian government is currently working on the Marriage Bill Draft.  One of the articles being discussed is on intermarriages, which are marriages between foreign citizens and the Indonesians.

Based on the draft received by VIVAnews on Thursday, February 18, intermarriages are put under Chapter XX, article 142. There are three paragraphs explaining about the issue.

The first paragraph talks about the procedures of intermarriages in which the requirements are the same with the ones in local marriages as set under Article 13 to 26.

The only difference is that future brides or grooms with foreign nationalities must obtain a permit from their original countries based on the proof from the embassies. This particular requirement is mentioned in the second paragraph.

Meanwhile, the third paragraph sets a special rule for foreign males who intend to marry Indonesian women, especially those who are Muslims. They are required to pay IDR500.000.000 worth of collateral to their future wives through Islamic banks in Indonesia.

One of the points in the draft, which is the one on unregistered marriage prosecution, has been sparking controversy among the society. Article 43 of the Marriage Bill Draft states, “Everyone who commits marriage not in front of a civil marriage officer, as mentioned in Article 5 paragraph 2, will have to pay IDR6.000.000 of maximum fine or serve maximum 6 months of jail time”.
