VIVAnews - Lifetime-sentenced Australian Martin Eric Stephen (34) proposes a judicial review to the Supreme Court through Denpasar Public Court. Stephen is involved in an 8.9 kg heroin smuggling from Australia to Bali in 2005.

The smuggling was committed together with his eight other friends, which is why the case is known as ‘Bali Nine’.

“We have received the judicial review documents on April 9. The trial will be held on May 7 and after that, we’ll send the documents to the Supreme Court and they’ll decide from there,” Denpasar Court Registrar Ketut Gede Rantam told reporters on Tuesday, April 13.

The trial, which solely aims to assess the review documents, will be led by Judge Djumain and two judge members Azer Simanjuntak and Firman Tambunan.

The requested review states an objection against the court’s verdict on September 6, 2006 that rejected the appeal. At the time, the court still insisted on imposing a lifetime sentence.

Stephen also included a written testimony from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) dated April 1 on his involvement in the case. The AFP mentions that Stephen’s role in the smuggling is considered minor.

Stephen was arrested on April 17, 2005 at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport along with other Bali Nine members that are Tan Duc Tanh, Matthew James Norman and Michael William Czugay, who have been sentenced to life; Rena Lawrence, who receives 20-year jail sentence; Myuran Sukumaran, Andrew Chan and Scott Anthony Rush, who are facing death penalty.

The lifetime imprisonment for Stephen was ruled by Denpasar Court on February 14, 2006 and reinforced by the verdict issued on April 27, 2006. On September 6, 2006, the Supreme Court also decided to reject Stephen’s appeal.
