VIVAnews – Following the scandal of cruelty toward cows in Indonesia’s slaughterhouses, Australia this week has suspended live cattle export to Indonesia. In response to the decision, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono today said the government is preparing four measures.

First, the government will cooperate to assure the sufficiency of meat supply for the next six months. “I’m also asking the governors whose provinces have large cattle to supply meat,” said Yudhoyono at Halim Perdana Kusuma Airbase, Jakarta.

Second, said Yudhoyono, the government will maintain the stability of meat price especially near Ramadan and Eid. “In spite of the rise in the price of consumed food, we hope that the rise would be normal. Otherwise it will burden the people who celebrate (the holiday),” he said.

As regards this issue, the Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association (API) has been committed to maintaining price stability. “They can also become part of the solution. Don’t take profit improperly,” he said.

Third, Yudhoyono also ordered for scrutiny and curb over the slaughterhouses in Indonesia. “A lot have met the standards, but maybe one, two, three or some have not,” he added.

Fourth, the slaughterhouses must uphold animal welfare. Lastly, said Yudhoyono, the Australian government’s cattle import ban is a blow to Indonesia. “It encourages us to mobilize our capability seriously to speed up meat self-sufficiency,” he stressed.

The polemic of Indonesia’s slaughterhouses came to the surface after the documentary on the cruelty on Australian cows was aired in ABC’s Four Corners program, Monday, May 30, 2011. In the video, the cows were slit on the throat ten times to kill them, when it is supposed to be only once.

Furthermore, there was a brutal scene when a cow slipped on slippery floor that it broke its legs. There were also scenes of cows whose tail was cut off as it was dragged, the eyes were gouged out and water being poured in the nose.
