VIVAnews – The Solo Municipal Government ran a random test on ‘railbus’ today. This is an indicator that Solo does not want to be left behind Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, in terms of providing mass transportation facility.
In the form of railway, which is rare in most Indonesian cities, this mode of transportation will operate from Purwosari, Solo station to Wonogiri. The transportation facility is not only aimed at tackling traffic jam, but also tourism icon.
Director of Safety and Facility Engineering of Railway Directorate General at the Department of Transportation, Hermanto Dwiatmoko, said that currently the ‘railbus’ is ready. However, the operation still awaits the inauguration.
“The ‘railbus’ replaces the Solo-Wonogiri feeder train which no longer operates,” he said on Tuesday, July 12.
Hermanto explained that the ‘railbus’ passenger capacity is around 160, standing or sitting. Up to now, the new facility has yet to determine the fare as the discussion is still ongoing. “PT KA (State Railway Company) is still calculating the tariff,” he said.
This kind of railbus, according to him, has been operating in South Sumatra. The ‘railbus’ is also used for transporting Sriwijaya University students. “This railbus can also function as tourism railway,” he said.
It is known that Solo is the only city which has railway side by side with the downtown highway. Before the ‘railbus’, the Solo Municipal Government has operated Jaladara steam-powered railway. The railway is a part of the Ambarawa steam railway museum’s collection.
