VIVAnews – The Ministry for the Environment holds a meeting on Indonesia's Waste Bank. The meeting involves the governor of Yogyakarta and seven mayors in Yogyakarta between 11-13 September.
Deputy Assistant IV for Waste Management of the Ministry for the Environment, R Sudirman, said this is the first time that the Waste Bank Meeting is held. The meeting will discuss a number of issues including the vision, mission, objectives and work programs of the Waste Bank as well as the 3R Movement (Reduce, Reuse, Recyle) in Indonesia. In addition, the minimum standards of the Waste Bank and the 3Rs Movement implementation will be formulated.
Sudirman said that this meeting should be the momentum to initially foster collective awareness of managing waste as close as possible to the source. "Starting with sorting the waste, and limiting the pile of waste. That way, waste management with environmental outlook can be a new culture in Indonesia," he said in a press release that VIVAnews received today.
Currently, a number of areas have already had Waste Banks including Padang, Pacitan, and Yogyakarta. "In the near future some areas are to follow having waste banks."
The Waste Bank development program is a strategy for building public awareness in order to consort with trash.
Waste Bank is also one of the programs that the government prioritizes to reduce the volume of waste by 7 percent a year. In order to maximize the program, the Ministry for the Environment collaborates with its partners.
