Archaeologist Discovers Elephant Fossil

VIVAnews - Archaeologist from Bandung Museum of Geology found an elephant fossil aged around 200-800,000 years old on Tuesday, April 7, in Sunggun hamlet, Mendalem ward, Keradenan subdistrict, Blora, Central Java or two kilometers from Bengawan Solo river.

The head of the Geology Museum Yunus Kusumabrata explained that the fossil was found by one of his staffs, Iwan Kurniawan, who were completing his Master degree.

"This is the first complete finding and probably the birthday gift for the 80th anniversary of the museum," he said when interviewed by VIVAnews on Wednesday, April 8.

After the fossil discovery, the museum sent a team of nine archaeologists to the location to conduct a research and excavation.  

At the present moment, the museum has only received 40 percent of the whole fossil, i.e. the skull, fore and rearfeet, hipbone, and fragments of the tusk. While the fragments of the backbone and ribs are still being excavated.
