VIVAnews - The Soekarno-Hatta Makasar Port Police (KP3) stalled the sales attempt of rare turtle species. The sea turtles were being kept at a house belongs to Lating, the resident of Tallo subdistrict, Makassar.
The head of KP3, Commissioner Sri Rejeki said they were aware of Lating’s illegal activity after they received reports from his neighbor a week ago. Since then, Lating was stalked by the police.
“As a result, Lating was arrested together with 19 alive sisik and piru turtles. He was just back from Paotere Harbor to pick up the turtles,” Rejeki said on Sunday, October 18.
The police later brought Lating to the station. Besides the 19 turtles, the police also confiscated dozens of 1 meter-long turtle shells as evidences.
According to Lating, he bought the turtles in Karangrang Island, Pangkep regency, South Sulawesi from a fisherman who sold them for Rp 20,000 to Rp 100,000. After being kept for a few days, Lating sold the turtles for Rp 200 thousand.
“The suspect said he was going to sell the turtles to Sawah Makassar market and some Chinese restaurants in Makassar,“ Rejeki said.
The police have now named Lating suspect in the case. If he is proven guilty, he would be charged with Law No 31, Article 1 paragraph 2 / 1990 on Natural Resources Conservation, Biology and Its Ecosystem. Lating is subjected to five years minimum imprisonment and Rp 100 million worth of fine.
The case is currently under investigation and the police suspect the sales of the animals, which are being protected by the state, are committed by a large group of sellers. Thus, there is still a chance of new suspects to emerge.
The 19 turtles are being taken care at the KP3 headquarter. They would later be handed over to North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Center to be returned to their natural habitat.
