VIVAnews - Bandan village might not be familiar to everyone. Those who do know it apparently deems the village in northern Jakarta a slum.
But, little do they know that there was an untold story lies within the Island back when Jakarta was still called Batavia.
Based on the historical records, the name of the village, which is located close to Sunda Kelapa Harbor, is derived from the word, Banda, an Island in Maluku.
It is believed that a group of Banda people was living in the area during the Batavia era. The name was considered normal because a lot of other places were named in a similar way such as pecinan (Chinatown) for Chinese village, pabean for taxation offices and customs and pekojan for Arabian village.
In Javanese, Banda means a bond. This is related to an event that the people during the Japanese era often witnessed.
During the time, the Japanese would go through the village while bringing the rebels with their hands tied to Ancol to be executed.
The third possibility is that Banda was taken from the word, Pandan. In the past, the village was filled with Pandanus trees which made the residents called the area Pandan village.
Regardless the history of its name, the village is said to be a shelter for slaves from Banda Island in Maluku when JP Coen was taking on the Island in 1621. Coen later performed a massacre and those who survived were brought to Batavia and then they fought against VOC in Marunda, North Jakarta.
After the era of slavery was over, the prisoners were hired to work at the Fish Market which was close to Sunda Kelapa harbor that was not far from the village.
The people stayed in the village for years and gave birth to their offsprings. A railway was later built in the village when Tanjung Priok Harbor was newly established.
The railway eventually connected Sunda Kelapa Harbor and Tanjung Priok.
Besides a station, Bandan village also still has an old mosque that is known by the name of Bandan village mosque. Despite its dirty, unhealthy and messy environment, the village is still worth to visit.
The Head of Old City Technical Managing Unit (UPT) Chandrian said Bandan village is a cultural conservation that is included in the city map according to the Governor Decree No 34 / 2006 and the eastern boundary which is the Old City revitalization program.
